Found myself thinking about pencils, looked them up, and they are more interesting than I imagined. Who knew they took so long to invent or that England had a monopoly on production until the mid-17th century…nearly 100 years? Unless I’m reading wrong, the leads are also ceramic: a compound of fired clay and graphite. So making pencils is a genuine, chemical transformation of raw materials into a brilliant tool.
